Everything you need to know about yard gates
You are curious about the possibilities regarding yard gates and are possibly considering a new or first purchase of a yard gate. When you enter the search term "yard gates or yard gate purchase" via Google, you will find many search results. In order to create a good starting point for you, we want to give you all the information you need via this gate guide to make the right choice for the purchase of your yard gate.
At Lands End we have an extensive range of yard gates , made in solid wood sizes and provided with traditional mortise and tenon joints. The thickness of the frame of each gate is for example a very robust 7cm! This thickness and the traditional wood joints determine the quality, the appearance and the straightness of the gate. And of course this also determines the price. After all, thicker wood is more expensive than thinner wood. This is important to consider when comparing with other suppliers. Lands End does not economize on wood sizes to be able to offer a good price, but we offer you a very good price with a great wood thickness and beautiful wood joints !
In addition, we offer you the choice between a friendly priced type of wood such as Douglas, but we also offer you a wide choice of hardwood models at a very attractive price.
In terms of gate models, you can choose a completely closed gate or a design that still provides some insight. Do you want a gate that goes up and provides your yard with optimum privacy or do you want to retain openness from your yard? These are a number of questions that you should know the answer to before you purchase a yard gate . We will guide you step by step in this selection process.
The function of a yard gate
A yard gate basically forms a fence for your yard. A yard gate or driveway gate can serve various purposes. This is therefore a first question/step to consider. Do you choose a yard gate or driveway gate because you want a clear demarcation of your yard or do you want to prevent people from looking in and enjoy your garden undisturbed in complete privacy in addition to this demarcation? The answer to this question ultimately determines what type of gate you end up with.
As you can see, below you can already see a difference in yard gates and therefore a difference in your privacy. The Baron Gate is a gate that forms a clear separation from your yard, but also offers a lot of openness. The Countess Gate is a solid gate, which goes up in height and thus, in addition to the clear separation, also creates a lot of privacy and closes off your yard from the environment. There are also combination gates available, an example of this is our Marquis gate . This offers partial privacy, but the space between the top bars also retains a certain degree of openness and space. So think carefully about what you want to use your yard gate for, just a clear separation while maintaining openness/view or do you mainly want to create privacy with your yard gate.
Which style suits your home and surroundings?
Another question to consider is, in what style do you want your yard gate or driveway gate? If you prefer simplicity, take a look at our Baroness Gate . If you prefer a graceful or elegant look, take a look at our Jonkvrouw gates made of Douglas wood or hardwood (read more about the different types of wood here). If you prefer a robust or sturdy look, then the Beethoven Gate or Bach Gate would be a good option. You will see that the function of your gate is closely related to the look and style of the gate. For example, the graceful and elegant yard gates or gates for your driveway have a bit more openness and the robust, closed gates offer a bit more privacy.
A single gate or a double gate?
Another consideration you can make is whether you want to purchase a single gate or a beautiful large (double) gate. This choice partly depends on the look you want. A double gate is often a luxurious or large gate. This often has an elegant and graceful look . An example is our Baron or Baroness Gate. A single gate is somewhat simpler and often looks a bit more massive. Our Bach Gate, Markies and Chopin Gates are examples of this.
Double access gates are often used when the separation covers a larger area, for example for access by car. You will then need a large gate. It is important to consider the method of approach when choosing the width. If you drive straight into the driveway, a car gate of 3m or 3.50m is sufficient. For a situation where you can only drive in at an angle, a wider gate is necessary. Often, the more luxurious yard gates are the first choice for access gates at a car driveway, but in a rural environment an English gate can also be very nice. So consider for yourself how large the separation should be and whether you want to opt for a single or double gate. You can also opt for an automated gate or a sliding gate . All yard gates offered are suitable for automation.
Do you choose hardwood or Douglas fir?
This type of wood forms an ideal base for a garden gate or for example a double gate. Douglas wood originally comes from the west of North America and is a type of spruce. This type of wood contains a lot of heartwood, which gives fungi less chance to rot the wood. When you purchase a gate made of Douglas wood, you choose a type of wood in durability class 3-4 . The associated lifespan is on average 10 years* . Furthermore, this type of wood gives a warm appearance due to the light yellow-red (orange) color. Under the influence of weather conditions, the wood will discolor to orange-brown over the years. Douglas wood can also be used well if you want to create a robust appearance with your yard gate or driveway gate, as cracks and tears develop over the years.
Want to know everything about Douglas wood? Read more about it on our Douglas wood page .
* The lifespan of softwood in general, including Douglas fir, can be partly influenced by maintenance. So keep in mind that Douglas fir is a softwood and therefore, in addition to the usual annual cleaning, requires regular maintenance in the form of varnish, stain or oil. All this applies to Douglas fir used above ground, such as the yard gates. For use in the ground, extra protection of the ground part of the Douglas fir is an absolute requirement to achieve an average lifespan of approximately 7 to 10 years for the Douglas fir placed in the ground. So keep in mind that your Douglas fir yard gate will last longer than the Douglas fir gate post. This is also the reason why Lands End offers other types of wood as standard for the gate posts belonging to the Douglas fir access gates. If desired, for example because you would like to have the same type of wood for the gate post, we can also offer you Douglas gate posts, but we strongly advise you to apply extra protection for the base part.

Hardwood Iroko
Our gates made of dried hardwood iroko are slightly darker in colour than the douglas gates. Iroko is a strong, very durable type of wood that hardly moves. This type of wood falls into durability class 1-2 and lasts 15-25+ years . Due to the limited movement of iroko, it is suitable for many purposes, both indoors and outdoors. Including for window frames, windows, doors, facade cladding, interior cladding, stairs, steps, furniture and therefore also gates. In order to reduce the low movement to zero, Lands End uses dried iroko hardwood.
Impregnation is not necessary, so iroko can be used untreated and is maintenance-free**. This makes iroko hardwood a maintenance-friendly and sustainable product.
You will see that the difference between douglas and hardwood is also mainly in the price. Hardwood is more durable than douglas wood and will therefore be higher in price. This is also the next question to look at.
** The iroko hardwood will turn grey over time due to exposure to sunlight. If you want to prevent this and therefore retain the original wood colour, you can treat the gate with a UV-resistant oil or varnish. For the longest enjoyment of the iroko gate, we recommend that you regularly clean the gate and remove green deposits. In a wooded area, this may be an annual job, but you will see for yourself whether it is necessary or not. This is not only important for the lifespan, but also for the beauty of the gate. A green-stained gate is not the most attractive entrance to your home. All gate models in our range of Yard Gates can be made of iroko hardwood.
What do you want to invest?
As with all products, your budget is also an important part of purchasing yard gates. You can buy a beautiful pedestrian gate for the access of people to your yard for €515 - the Barones Poort is an example of this. The various price ranges are ultimately formed by the type of material and the size you choose. The price within our range is therefore determined by:
- The type of wood you choose. Douglas fir is generally a bit cheaper than hardwood and is therefore a bit lower in price for our various models.
- The dimensions of your fence also largely determine the costs. For example, are you looking for a luxury gate, a large gate or a double gate? Then you will end up in the higher price range.
Are you comparing our prices with other suppliers? Then know that it is important to pay attention to the wood sizes , that is to say the thickness of the wooden frame. A thicker wood size not only looks more robust and sturdy, but is also more durable and offers a quality gate that remains nice and straight.
Important : Do you already have posts or brick piles between which the gate must fit? Or does your driveway have a very specific width? That is no problem at all. Every gate can be made to exact dimensions in both width and height. With maximum dimensions, because we are happy to guarantee that the gate will remain straight. At Lands End you also opt for customization, if this is necessary in your situation. Our customer service is ready for you, when you need advice or help with ordering.
Are you going to automate the gate?
For all gate models within our range of Erfpoorten there is the possibility to automate . Remember that it is important for an automated gate that it is a solid gate of robust wood sizes and strong wood connections. The motors literally 'pull' on your gate every day when opening and closing. These forces can quickly cause problems with a gate of poor quality, such as warping and loose connections.
Would you like to opt for complete delivery and installation?
You can of course choose to assemble your own gate. You should take into account that gates are often delivered without posts or locks . You will therefore have to order these yourself. The choice of delivery and assembly or to install it yourself often also depends on the available budget. This is therefore something to think about. Having it delivered or picking it up yourself also plays a role. Of course, it often concerns larger packages, which is why delivery may be the easiest option.

Finally, this: an environmental permit?
This is probably not the first thing you think of or want to think about when you are looking for a new gate. However, before you start the fun search, it is wise to first check whether you are allowed to place your gate without a permit. A gate is a building and may require a permit. There are many cases in which you are allowed to place your fence without a permit, but first read the conditions so that you are sure. It would be a shame if you were to be fined.
It is often the case that you can place a yard gate on your own property or plot without a permit , if it is lower than 1 meter . Also, fences that are higher than 1 meter but not higher than 2 meters can usually still be placed without permits. The execution can sometimes also be important: a more open character or a fully or partially closed character of the gate, can or cannot be appreciated by the municipality. There are a few conditions for this:
- You are building on a plot of land or land on which a building already stands.
- The separation is located behind the front building line.
- The separation is more than 1 meter away from the road or public green. This condition does not apply if there are no requirements for separations with regard to aesthetics for the location where you live.
In order to be well and correctly informed, we advise you to always contact your municipality. This way you know exactly which rules apply and which permits are required.
