Types of wood and sustainability
The choice of a type of wood is an essential factor when purchasing a gate, fence or enclosure. After all, fences are exposed to weather conditions, such as moisture, and must therefore be suitable to last for years. We therefore offer gates and fences that are made exclusively from sustainable quality wood. At Lands End you have the choice of chestnut wood, Douglas wood or hardwood. These types of wood have sturdy properties and therefore offer a long lifespan of at least 20 years.
Types of Gates
A double gate is often a luxurious or large gate. This often has an elegant and graceful appearance. An example is our Baron or Baroness Gate. A single gate is somewhat simpler and often looks somewhat more massive. Our Bach Gate, Markies and Chopin gates are examples of this.
Double access gates are often used when the separation covers a larger area, for example for access by car. You will then need a large gate. It is important to consider the method of approach when choosing the width. If you drive straight into the driveway, a car gate of 3m or 3.50m is sufficient. For a situation where you can only drive in at an angle, a wider gate is necessary. Often, the more luxurious yard gates are the first choice for access gates at a car driveway, but in a rural environment an English gate can also be very nice. So decide for yourself how large the separation should be and whether you want to opt for a single or double gate. You can also opt for an automated gate or a sliding gate. All yard gates offered are suitable for automation.
With us you will find gates made of hardwood or douglas wood. Both gates are durable and of good quality. But there is a difference between them and can therefore play a role in your purchase.
Hardwood gate Iroko
Our gates made of dried hardwood Iroko are slightly darker in colour than the Douglas gates. Iroko is a strong, very durable type of wood that hardly moves. This type of wood falls into durability class 1-2 and lasts 15-25+ years . Due to the limited movement of Iroko, it is suitable for many purposes, both indoors and outdoors. Including for frames, windows, doors, facade cladding, interior cladding, stairs, steps, furniture and therefore also gates. In order to reduce the low movement to zero, Lands End uses dried Iroko hardwood. Impregnation is not necessary, so Iroko can be used untreated and is maintenance-free. This makes Iroko hardwood a maintenance-friendly and durable product. You will see that the difference between Douglas and hardwood is mainly in the price. Hardwood is more durable than Douglas wood and will therefore be more expensive.
Douglas gate
This type of wood forms an ideal base for a garden gate or for example a double gate. Douglas wood originally comes from the west of North America and is a type of spruce. This type of wood contains a lot of heartwood, which gives fungi less chance to rot the wood. When you purchase a gate made of Douglas wood, you choose a type of wood in durability class 3-4 . The associated lifespan is on average 10 years . Furthermore, this type of wood gives a warm appearance due to the light yellow/red (orange) color. Under the influence of weather conditions, the wood will discolor to orange-brown over the years. Douglas wood can also be used well if you want to create a robust appearance with your yard gate or driveway gate, as cracks and tears develop over the years.
Fence
A crucial factor to consider is the length of the post. We provide you with standard long post lengths, for example 2.20m for the Economy and Solid fence types, and 2.25m for the 2.25m high Queen fence. These lengths make it possible to place the upper beam of the fence flexibly, even up to a height of 1.40m.
The strength of your fence largely depends on the length of the posts anchored in the ground. If you choose to place the top beam at 1.20m, 1.30m or 1.40m respectively, the part anchored in the ground corresponds to 90cm, 80cm or 70cm. The depth of the post in the ground is essential for the stability of your fence. By calibrating this properly, we ensure that your fence remains sturdy, even in changing weather conditions.
Pierced fences have a rural, luxurious look and are extremely suitable for fencing off pasture or creating a riding arena or track for horses. Our range offers a choice between two or three beams, with which you determine the style and sturdiness of your fencing. The pierced fence is known for its sturdiness, whereby the beams are inserted through the posts. This is done completely or with 5.5 to 7 cm in the post. This method offers various advantages. For example, the fencing is very sturdy and the fence is suitable for safe fencing of, for example, your horses. Inserting the posts also requires fewer screws than, for example, a screw-on fence. This gives the pierced fence an authentic, symmetrical look on both sides. Because the fencing is made of high-quality wood, the fence is very durable.
Lands End's push-through fences are available in various types of wood, namely chestnut wood , pine or hardwood . Each type of wood has its own appearance and properties. Chestnut wooden push-through fences have a robust and natural look, while pine fencing is more polished. For the most durable type of wood, choose hardwood. The push-through fences are all available in two and three beams. The three-beam push-through fence gives the fencing more strength due to the extra beam. Do you want your fence to look modern and rustic? Choose the fence with an impregnated black coating.
The traditional way of fencing off a horse pasture, for example, is with posts and planks, where the planks are screwed to the posts. This is also called a screw-on fence . With this choice, you opt for a beautiful and solid fence that you will enjoy for years to come. Lands End makes the choice for this fencing even easier by offering a range of beautiful products at very attractive prices.
The screw-on fences are made of first-class pinewood . This wood has a long lifespan and is therefore suitable for placing in outdoor conditions. The sturdy fixing method and quality wood ensure a safe, practical and good-looking fence. In this way, Lands End contributes to a durable and reliable fence for your horse arena or paddock.
A Post and Rail fence has been in use in England for centuries and is also increasingly used in our country. The split posts and beams are inserted into each other by means of milled holes. The tough structure of the chestnut wood offers good protection against all weather conditions and is therefore maintenance-free. This wooden property boundary provides a decorative image in the landscape due to its natural appearance and is therefore a perfect choice when a rural and authentic appearance is required. Post and Rail made of split chestnut wood is a true classic in the range of landsend-nl.com: robust and at one with nature.
Riding arena fencing
Our riding arena fences are available in the most common sizes: 15x30 meters, 20x40 meters and 20x60 meters. Whether you are a recreational rider or a competition rider, our riding arena fences offer you the perfect dimensions for your purposes. The standard riding arena size of 20x40 meters is suitable for a wide range of riders and is also the official competition size. If you need more space to train, our 20x60 meter riding arena is the perfect choice. This larger size offers you the freedom and flexibility to improve your riding skills.
At Lands End we offer a choice between two heights: 1.20 metres and 1.40 metres. There are also a number of other options: Do you want a 2-beam riding arena or the even sturdier 3-beam riding arena? Do you want a gate or not? In our range we have responded to the various wishes as best as possible so that you get a horse arena fence that fully meets your wishes and requirements. It is also possible to order post savers at the same time. These post protectors ensure that your wooden riding arena lasts extra long because they protect the posts against moisture and wood rot.
Wooden Poles
Our (hard)wood T-posts are perfect for building sturdy structures, such as fences, railings and wooden gates. They offer excellent stability and can carry large loads.
Corner posts are ideal for creating corners in fences or for supporting structures where extra stability is required. Intermediate posts are used to bridge the gap between corner posts and provide a solid base for fencing or other structures. Half posts are useful when you need partial support, such as when attaching panels to a wall.
A post saver is a bitumen shrink sleeve to further extend the life of the post. The post protector is made of thick polyethylene and protects the posts against moisture and wood rot. Lands End post savers vary in length and width between 10 cm and 17 cm.
Place the cover over the post. For a firm attachment, it is important to burn the post saver around the post. This is possible with the help of the meltable bitumen seal on the inside of the cover. The material melts through the heat and shrinks like a sleeve around the post. By means of a gas burner, hot air gun or paint burner, you can easily and quickly attach the protector to the post. Upon delivery to your home, you will receive a comprehensive manual for the correct placement of the protective covers.
Impregnate
Yes, definitely! Wood products in their untreated state can be susceptible to moisture and mold, which can affect their lifespan. In order to effectively counteract this inherent vulnerability, our posts are made durable by means of an impregnation agent. Thanks to the impregnation agent, our pasture posts become resistant to moisture and mold, which significantly extends their lifespan. With this treatment, you can not only enjoy the charming appearance of the posts, but also their long-term resistance to weather influences and other factors. This way, you can enjoy these beautiful and ecologically responsible pasture posts for years to come without any worries.

The pine wood is impregnated under high vacuum and pressure. The process starts in the boiler with a pre-vacuum, to remove as much air and moisture from the wood as possible. After this, the boiler is filled with a high concentration of impregnation agent while the vacuum is maintained. With a double pressure of approximately 10 bar, the wood preservative is pressed into the wood. A post-vacuum then sucks away the last excess moisture. When the boiler is opened, a negative pressure is created in the wood for a clean surface. This process is repeated for full saturation.

The size of sheep fence that is most suitable depends on the specific situation and circumstances. In general, the height of the sheep fence is adjusted to the intended use. Here are some guidelines:
Vegetable gardens : For vegetable gardens, a 50 cm high sheep fence is often chosen. This helps to keep out unwanted animals and at the same time maintains an open feeling.
Smaller City Gardens : In smaller city gardens, a height of 80 cm is often used. This offers a good balance between privacy and openness.
Pastures and Large Gardens : For larger areas, such as pastures and large gardens, heights of 100 cm or 120 cm are usually chosen. These heights also serve to keep small children within the garden or away from water. When selecting these heights, it is essential to choose a sheep fence with a small slat spacing (2 or 4 cm) to prevent children from using the wires as a stepladder.
Higher Sizes for Fencing : The higher sizes of sheep fencing are typically used as garden fencing or fencing. They provide more privacy and serve as an effective boundary for larger outdoor spaces.
In short, the choice of sheep fence size is guided by the intended use, space and safety needs.
