Horse wire fencing: in various sizes at Lands End

Horse fencing should be at least 1.2 to 1.5 meters high, but for larger horses, a height of 1.8 meters may be necessary. For smaller horses, a minimum height of 80 cm is required. Lands End horse fencing is available in various heights, from 80 cm to 190 cm.

The difference between the different types of horse mesh

• Parco® Crapal®2 robust industrial mesh: This mesh is constructed with rectangular meshes and large-diameter wires. It has a mesh size of 101.6 x 50.8 mm and a wire diameter of 2.7 mm. Thanks to the Crapal®2 zinc and aluminum coating, this type of mesh offers excellent corrosion resistance. Rolls are 25 meters long and heights vary from 100 cm to 180 cm.

• Estate®WIRE FX Horse Mesh: This mesh features continuous horizontal and vertical wires connected by individual robust FX knots, creating a strong and durable fence. The robust movable knot makes the horse mesh animal-friendly, skin- and coat-friendly. This type of mesh is available in various mesh sizes of 5 cm, 7.5 cm, and 15 cm. The smaller the mesh, the less chance of hooves getting caught in it. The mesh size therefore depends on your own preference. The mesh has a wire thickness of 2.5 mm and, thanks to the Crapal®2 coating, offers excellent corrosion resistance. Rolls are available in 50 meters or 100 meters long, and heights vary from 100 cm to 190 cm.

• Prairie® Heavy Wire Mesh: This mesh has gradually increasing mesh sizes, making it ideal for use as fencing for your horses. The head and foot wires are 3.7 mm, and the horizontal and vertical wires are 3.0 mm. Thanks to the Crapal®4 coating, this mesh is extremely corrosion-resistant, four times longer than galvanized wire and twice as long as other types of horse mesh. Rolls are 50 meters long, and heights vary from 80 cm to 140 cm.

Why choosing a mesh fence is a good choice.

Mesh fencing is more affordable than other options like wood. Wire fencing is also durable, and the flexibility of the wire makes it less likely to break if a horse runs into it. Mesh fencing is also much easier to dismantle and move than other fencing types. This makes it a good option for temporary fencing or if you want to relocate paddock areas. The only drawback to horse wire may be limited visibility, but this can easily be solved by adding a privacy board.

Which posts are suitable for installing horse wire?

For installing horse fencing, round pasture posts , such as peeled chestnut or robinia posts, and Lands End softwood posts, are the best choice. These posts can be placed every 2.5 or 3 meters. For optimal stability, insert the pasture posts one-third into the ground. Use posts with a diameter of 10-12 cm or higher. The bottom of the fence should be 15 to 20 cm above the ground to prevent foals from rolling under it and adult horses from grazing outside the pasture. Install the fence posts on the outside (away from the animals) to give the fence more support if a horse leans on it and to prevent your horses from getting splinters.

How do you tighten horse wire?

Once the pasture posts are securely in place, you can attach the horse wire. To tighten the wire, begin by securing it to the start and end posts with staples. Make sure the wire is securely attached to these posts. Use staples for the remaining posts as well, but the wire doesn't need to be secured there. This makes it easier to tighten the horse wire.
